Tower Garden
A tower garden is a compact, vertical, aeroponic growing system that will grow up to 28 organic vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers in less than three square feet. It’s the perfect companion for teaching students about healthy living and can be used indoors or out. We use it INSIDE our classroom.
“The great part about purchasing a tower garden is that it arrives with everything you need to begin growing. It is easy to assemble and it naturally entices kids to eat healthy,” says Linda Dahl, a DeWitt Millennium Garden Club member.
Teaching kids to grow fresh produce is important as many students have never had this hands-on experience. When students plant and grow healthy, organic vegetables for themselves to eat, it positively impacts their health now and in the future. Planting this health seed while kids are still young and impressionable greatly benefit individuals, over 300 students during this year alone.
Educators across the United States are utilizing tower gardens to cultivate a desire to learn. Attendance and graduation rates in many schools have increased as a result of this project based learning. Students are motivated to go to school and their participation is soaring. Many organizations understand the importance of fresh organic produce and its many benefits. In fact, tower gardens are now grown in many places. Here are four surprising locations: 26 tower gardens at O'Hare Airport provide the produce used in some of their upscale restaurants; 19 tower gardens at The Garden at AT&T Giants Stadium, San Francisco, that feed fans; 30 tower gardens at Step Up on Vine, a permanent supportive housing project in Hollywood, California, that Kobe Bryant began as a commitment to end youth homelessness; and 50 plus tower gardens at the Salvation Army Rooftop Farm in Chicago to name just a few.
Our first tower garden was purchased for students in the spring of 2016; our second tower garden was purchased in the spring of 2017. It has been a smart investment that will benefit students in the DeWitt school system for generations to come.
A huge thank you to the following individuals and organizations that financially supported this exciting venture:

Tran, Dr. Michell Dobrzelewski, DeWitt Optometry; Mr. Bill Sermak, Family Barber Shop; Mr. Bruce Joslyn, Reed Insurance Agency; Dr. Jennifer Whitman, Downtown DeWitt Chiropractic; Mrs. Ginny Matheson; Mrs. Linda Dahl; Mr. John Rademacher; Mr. Robert Wirtz and family; the DeWitt Millennium Garden Club, and Hungry Howies.
