Espalier Fruit Trees
Five organic espalier fruit trees, 4 honey crisp and 1 pear, are growing in our school garden. Roots from a smaller growing tree root (dwarfing root stock) have been graphed onto the bottom of a fruit tree top (bud). The root stock is from Oregon and the tree buds are from Washington State. After the top and bottom of these two separate trees begin growing together in a nursery, the trees can be transplanted. The result is a smaller growing tree that produces fruit an average sized person can reach when standing on the ground.
These cool trees are growing on the southern side of one of Herbison Woods School in our student garden. Each tree has been trained to grow limbs along a wire, against the school exterior wall. Students and teachers are learning to "prune" the trees from experts in the espalier tree growing business. The warm southwest sun exposure allows our trees to grow fruit best throughout it's growing season.
