Butterfly Garden
Our teachers lead lessons involving a beautiful walk through our woodlot to our butterfly garden, which is located in the back portion of our DeWitt Nature Center, on our campus.
DeWitt Public Schools has an official Monarch Waystation!
Monarch Waystations are places that provide resources necessary for monarchs to produce successive generations and sustain their migration. Why is this so important? Monarch populations are decreasing each year. Widespread adoption of herbicide-resistant crops (such as corn and soybeans) have resulted in unprecedented loss of habitat. Monarchs cannot survive without milkweed; their caterpillars only eat milkweed plants and monarchs need milkweed to lay their eggs. Without milkweed in their breeding areas, monarchs are unable to produce the successive generations that culminate in the migration each fall. Similarly, without nectar from flowers these fall migratory monarch butterflies would be unable to make their long journey to overwintering grounds in Mexico. We need host plants for larvae and energy sources for adults applies to all monarch and butterfly populations around the world. Through this waystation, we are contributing to monarch conservation, an effort that will help assure the preservation of the species and the continuation of the spectacular monarch migration phenomenon.
